VMA and Excel Centers want to increase the academic resources for active duty, veteran, and military-connected students on campus. Tutors selected for the Student Veteran Program are either former military, military-affiliated and non-traditional students. They are excited to work with military students!

The Excel Center offers specific tutors for veteran students in math, science, and writing! Scroll down to see their information and availability.


A math tutor is available at the Student Veteran Center on Tuesdays 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM ( Walk-in support, no appointment needed)

Science Center, Centennial Hall RM: 204, 719-255-3689

Tommaso is a senior peer tutor in the Science Center, is in the military now. He is in the Science Center 26 hours a week to tutor students in biology and chemistry.

Additionally, Deborah Sather is the Assistant Director of the Science center and a child of a Navy veteran. She has an open-door policy to meet with students Monday through Thursday 8:30 – 4:30 and Friday 8:30 – 3:30 pm.  While she does not tutor, she can outline the available resources at the Science Center to maximize their study of biology, chemistry, and physics.

Heather B.  (Available on Thursdays 9-3)

Heather is a US Army veteran that fell in love with the Colorado mountains. WEST and American History are her areas of scholarly focus. Once she completes her history graduate degree at UCCS, she plans on becoming a librarian and a professor. Her favorite things are critical analysis, researching, brainstorming, and anything history related. She is here for fellow veterans [for] writing or brainstorming!

Languages Center, Dwire Hall RM: 270, 719-255-3691

Nate, Marine Veteran, History major & German minor 

Nate is a Lead Tutor & very familiar with the processes and academic support services available for all our languages and testing. Students can initially connect with him and then assist in finding a tutor for languages other than German.

Additionally, Sandy Ho, Ph.D., Director of the Excel Languages and Cultures Center and Assistant Professor attendant, is a dependent of a U.S. Army 1SG (Ret.).
